Following a yearlong application process, through the Historic Churches Committee, the Refurbishment works at St Mary’s Church were undertaken on behalf of the parish and Ampleforth Abby Trust.
LHL Group initially undertook a Quinquennial survey and later developed this into a full schedule of works before overseeing the project on site. The building required a number of repairs to remedy historic damp issues and to bring the building back to its former glory.
The church is historically important for being the first church built after the Catholic Relief Act, because of this the church was built in a restrained style to match other Georgian properties in Knaresborough. During numerous alterations in the past the church had lost its focal point with no clear and defined dais. The works included the formation of one off plaster mouldings, timber panelling and decorations to bring a focal point to the expansive space.
The project was delivered to programme and significantly under budget whilst achieving all the aims set out on inception.
